When Aeon Media introduced a bold vision for a new international cultural event series, it was an opportunity to bring something ambitious to life.
Having collaborated across a number of brand and digital projects, there was already a clear understanding of the team’s ambition and appetite for big ideas. This project built on that momentum.
The challenge was to create a warm, engaging and atmospheric identity and digital experience for their latest venture, the Sophia Club.
In the words of Paul Hains, Founder and CEO: “Philosophy is for everyone. We all have a stake in making sense of the world and puzzling over what it means to live a good life. The Sophia Club reflects my belief that we can all be the philosophers of our own lives. I hope you will join us.”
What is the Sophia Club?
The Sophia Club is an open, welcoming space for curious thinkers, centred around live philosophical conversations between a host and guest. Each event is enriched by performances from musicians, dancers and artists, offering different ways of engaging with ideas.
Themes are drawn from five fields of inquiry: world views, deep time, being human, living together and creating art.
While the long-term vision includes a permanent home, the programme currently exists as a series of cultural events across New York, London and Melbourne. Its first season, running from April to July 2022, introduced the format through a series of live philosophy events in each city.

A light in the dark
The visual identity and website were designed to create an immersive journey of ideas, reflecting the atmosphere of the Sophia Club and its Live Philosophy events.
Inspiration came from the setting itself. Bright light against dark, urban environments, the warmth of a crowd and a sense of quiet intrigue. Capturing this mood became central to the approach, with a visual language that could translate across multiple cities.
The result is a wordmark that reads like a neon sign within an abstract cityscape. A palette of deep reds and dusky blues reinforces the tone, brought to life through a cinematic hero animation.

Captivating users
The digital experience was designed to fully embody the brand’s character, not simply reflect it. Consistent application of the identity, paired with simple navigation and a clear focus on events, creates an experience that feels cohesive and immersive.
The result draws users in, echoing the transition from a bright street into a more atmospheric, intimate space.

The Collingwood Project
Sophia Club is working with March Studio to restore and renovate a Victorian building in Collingwood, creating a permanent home for Live Philosophy in Melbourne.
In the meantime, the program continues across Melbourne, London and New York.

“You immediately understood our vision for the Sophia Club, translating the jazz-inspired nature of our Live Philosophy events into a rich digital experience. The site is beautiful, immersive and smooth to navigate, capturing some of the magic we aim to bring to each Sophia Club event.”
