Psyche is a digital magazine dedicated to helping readers understand themselves and live well.
It offers thoughtful, carefully crafted articles and videos, spanning topics from essays on grief to guides on setting boundaries. Psyche’s content is designed to inspire reflection, growth and connection.
As its readership expanded and editorial direction evolved, the platform reached a natural point of transition. A refreshed identity and redesigned website were needed to support richer content, engage a broader audience and deliver a more seamless experience across devices.
Ready for a new chapter
As Psyche’s content offering expanded, the existing site began to show its limitations. The structure made it difficult for readers to access the full breadth of topics, particularly on mobile, which had become the primary mode of access. Visually, the experience lacked the flexibility and energy needed to reflect the richness of the editorial. The brand itself remained recognisable, but required refinement to feel as bold, warm and globally relevant as the stories it tells.
The brief was clear. Evolve the brand identity, redesign the website to support a more diverse editorial model and deliver a seamless experience across all devices. There was also a focus on elevating expert contributors and introducing new content formats with a more dynamic and engaging expression.

Along the way, several key challenges shaped the approach:
- Establishing a clear content architecture that improves navigation and supports exploration
- Elevating flagship content to give priority to the most important editorial pieces
- Creating a seamless long-form reading experience across devices
- Balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders, including editorial, marketing, development and leadership teams
Scope and considerations
The program of work included:
- A refreshed masthead and visual identity
- A complete website redesign, with new templates to support a broader range of content
- Optimisation across mobile and desktop
- A new illustration direction, including animated and spot artwork
- A flexible suite of email templates
A central challenge was finding the right balance. The experience needed to feel more dynamic, curated and exploratory, without losing the qualities readers already valued. This meant navigating the space between sophistication and warmth, boldness and accessibility, while ensuring the platform remained practical and effective for teams across the organisation.
Laying the groundwork with research and strategy
The process began with a collaborative workshop to align on goals, understand reader behaviour and identify gaps in the existing experience. This was supported by a full site audit and a review of comparable publishing platforms to inform a clear set of recommendations.
A key insight emerged. While the content was highly valued, the structure limited discovery and made it difficult for readers to follow their curiosity. This was particularly evident on mobile, where the experience lacked the fluidity needed to support deeper engagement.
To guide the direction, a spectrum of brand and UX territories was explored, ranging from more progressive reimaginings to considered refinements. This helped establish the right level of change, with the chosen approach focusing on evolution rather than reinvention.
The resulting strategy prioritised exploration over chronology and clarity over complexity.
Key shifts included:
- Moving from chronological listings to curated, magazine-style sections
- Introducing content hubs and themed channels to better express the breadth of the offering
- Redesigning article templates to support a wider range of formats and reading experiences
- Elevating expert contributors to reinforce editorial authority
- Streamlining mobile navigation to improve ease of use and engagement

Designing for depth, clarity and curiosity
The visual identity was refined to balance elegance with warmth, while allowing greater flexibility across editorial contexts. This included updates to the masthead, a more expressive typographic system and a colour palette that feels more human and inviting.
The homepage was restructured to support exploration, bringing forward curated collections, new content channels and flagship pieces. A suite of distinct templates was developed to support both existing and emerging formats, including Notes to Self, Guides, Stories of Change, Videos and Ideas.

A range of new features were introduced to create a more rewarding experience for both editors and readers:
- Dynamic index pages that surface new and related content
- Clean article layouts with a clear and consistent visual hierarchy
- Greater editorial flexibility in structuring and styling content, including support for drop caps, pull quotes, multiple heading levels and modules such as Key Points and Find Out More
- Deeper content journeys for readers, including mid-article recommendations, continuous scrolling for Notes to Self and an Up Next queue for video content
- Improved search and filtering to support easier, more intuitive discovery
- Clear labelling, colour coding and metadata to help readers navigate and engage with areas of interest
To introduce warmth and personality, a suite of custom illustrations was commissioned from Tallulah Fontaine. These pieces add moments of charm and visual interest throughout the experience, with select illustrations brought to life through subtle animation.
These details are used with intent, gently guiding attention to key moments such as newsletter sign-ups and donation prompts, without interrupting the reading experience.

A seamless handover for development
The design and strategy were handed over to Aeon Media’s in-house development team, who brought the experience to life with care and precision. The result is a platform that is fast, flexible and true to the creative vision across all devices.

A thoughtful relaunch for curious readers
The new Psyche site launched with a more intuitive and exploratory experience across all touchpoints, better supporting the depth and breadth of its content.
By staying true to its mission of delivering thoughtful, high-quality content without barriers, the platform is now better positioned for continued growth and relevance, enabling readers around the world to explore, reflect and connect.
“The team were wonderful to work with and expertly brought the Psyche relaunch vision to life. They took the time to really understand all aspects of the project and it was a pleasure to partner with them. We are thrilled with the result.”
