Google Wave - Once a tsunami, now a ripple?
On the 4th of August, Google announced that it would cease to develop its newly launched Wave platform, much to the sorrow of designers and developers all over the world.
The Wave technology platform was heralded by many as one of Google’s most innovative offerings. Although there was much hype around its release, senior vice president Urs Holzle stated that the technology platform, “…had not seen the user adoption we would have liked.”This is indeed sad, as the concept of collaborative exchanges that underpinned Wave seemed to have huge potential. Wave was meant to bring together email, social networking, chat and document sharing to create an interactive and collaborative environment.
Though the Wave site will stay open for the remainder of 2010, Google haven’t specified the ultimate fate of the technology. Google have mentioned however that they are looking to integrate components of Wave into other Google projects.
On a personal note, Wave looked like it would have been a great product particularly for the web design industry. It would have provided web designers and developers with an environment to quickly and easily share ideas and concepts. This potential extended to providing improved and more engaging interaction with clients and people on your social network.
We hope to see Wave resurface in some shape or form at some time in the future.
