This month we’ll be looking at two quick tips to help you get your eNewsletter content perfect.

Be wary of spam filters when using images

Although images might help your eNewsletter look slick and professional, using too many images can trap your eNewsletter in the Spam folder of your reader’s inbox.

The trick to avoiding this is to always include text in your newsletters. We all know that spam filters look for certain words in emails, but they also look for word to image ratio. Never design an eNewsletter created with one huge graphic. As images can be turned off, it’s not recommended to create one huge graphic. If you need to use imagery, use smaller thumbnails rather than large graphics. If you can’t include lots of text, and your content can only stretch to one or two lines, don’t use more than one or two graphics in the email.

Using Flash, movies and other media

Further to using graphics in eNewsletters, avoid using too much rich media such as flash animations, movies and other items that use JavaScript or ActiveX. Again, these can cause issues when it comes to spam filters. These items can often be infected with viruses, so most anti-virus programs check incoming emails for these.

To avoid this from happening, replace an animation or movie with a stunning graphic. Link the graphic to a landing page on your website, and put the movie or animation on that landing page.
