During March this year Hitwise (search intelligence aggregator) announced that Facebook received more traffic than Google for the week ending March13th. This statistic is based on how many people in the US typed "Facebook.com" into their browser rather than "Google.com" this shouldn't be looked at in isolation as areas such as Gmail and YouTube (both part of Google) were not accounted for. Also don't forget that this doesn't take into account users who use Google website browser plug-ins to search directly.

What is really interesting is that the overall traffic to Facebook grew by over 180% in the last year compared to Google's traffic which only grew by approximately 9%.  This does say something about the state of Social Media and the impact it is having. That said, MySpace has been reported as falling further behind its arch rival (Facebook) which is bound to have Microsoft concerned.
