7 Tips For Social Media Success

You’ve signed up for Twitter, set up a Facebook page and YouTube beckons. Now what?! Here are some tips to help you on your way:

  1. Knowledge is power
    The key to understanding social media is to get involved in it. Like any new skill or technology, it can be daunting and a bit intimidating to know where to start and what to do. Have a look around and see what your competitors are doing and become familiar with the content and features available with the service. Once you're involved, it will give you a better understanding of the protocol and culture of the service and you'll stand in better stead to keep up with any changes or advancements in technology. Keep in mind that humans have been socialising for thousands of years and you probably do this on a daily basis; only the tools and technology are new.

  2. Be yourself
    It's a good idea to humanise your communication and show your personality. Not only will you appear more genuine and authentic, you'll be crafting messages in a way that people will want to engage with you. No one is interested in following a robot! Also remember that while you're online, your commentary is a permanent record - so you should aim to be on your best behaviour and promote the most positive image of your business.

  3. Customise your profile
    It's easy to spot a beginner when the default graphics and images are still applied. Add your logo and company colours to promote your company and its products and/ or services, and to serve as a visual reminder of your brand. You could also customise your profile for special events or promotions to keep interest levels up for people who visit your profile often.

  4. Post frequently
    It's a good idea to set up a plan for your social media communication strategy so that it sets the standard for consistency, and everyone knows who's responsible for which aspects. Posting frequently keeps your business top of mind and piques the interest of followers. If you don't regularly update your content, would there be a reason why someone would want to follow you? You can add value to your posts by sharing tips and tricks and insights into your industry - make your posts valuable so that followers don't feel as though they are wasting their time. If it seems like a lot of effort, be persistent - it will take time for results to show. You could also consider using a service that allows you to post to various sites all at once or integrate all your social media applications. Examples include Ping.fm, hellotxt and TweetDeck.

  5. Be interactive
    Follow others and participate in conversations. A simple way to engage your audience is to ask questions so that people can give feedback. Surveys and competitions are another way that you can create interaction with your audience. Using feedback from your interactions can assist you to profile your followers and see who your online audience really is, and measure how much people are engaging with you.

  6. Listen
    If you ask a question, listen to the answers you receive. Take any suggestions and feedback on board and use this to better your business. If someone comments on your profile or link, reply. You can set up Google Alerts to track what people are saying about your business online. Simply enter a topic you wish to monitor, and Google will email you any time the latest results are found that match your choice of query or topic.

  7. Drive traffic to your website
    It's not always possible to predict which social media applications will still be in place (and popular) in 12 months time, so by keeping your website as your 'home base' you mitigate the risk of losing online clout if applications change or cease to exist.
